After some of the worst service I have ever had I actually wrote to the management. I'll let you know if they ever get back to me (its been about a month) Do yourself a favor and save your money. There are so many nice options around...ones without stains on the tablecloth and peeling paint. Honestly the food is on par with cattlemans steakhouse in Sanford or The Stockyard in Deland (both are at least 1/2 price of Genes) It's not bad food, it's just very pricy for what you get. Like I said in the letter you can pay the same price for much better quality and service at Stonewood grill or Shulas, or pony up an extra $20 and go to Ruth's Chris or Del Friscos. To Whom it may concern, Hello there, I thought I might take a minute to share my recent experience at your restaurant. My husband and I made reservations at the "only time available". It wasn't really a problem, more laughable as when we got to Genes it was next to dead. Maybe a quarter of the tables in one dining room were taken. Ok...whatever not a big deal. The man that brought us to our seats was very pleasant. The young man walking around taking plates and filling drinks also very observant and did a great job. Our waitress, on the other hand, was terrible. Not just bad, but rude, and actually one of the worst waitresses I've come across. 1st it took us around 30 minutes to order because we asked for unsweet tea, she brought us sweet. When we informed her of this, instead of taking our appetizer order with the tea (that she argued about) she grabbed the glasses and stormed off. We didn't see her again for some time 2 When we did order she kept correcting my husband on his pronunciation. He ordered a caprese salad and said caprese instead of "capresy" Who cares? Also she kept informing us that the blue cheese is Roquefort. Again, who cares? If she did it in a funny, nice, joking, whatever way it would have been ok, but she was totally rude as if we were stupid and she needed to take the time to teach us. If she wanted to teach us something she could have gone over the specials or some highlights on the wine list like I heard the other waiter doing. 3 Our salads came well before the appetizer. Again we really didn't care, just weird. When she would plop down our food she immediately turned and walked away. She was just too busy with her other few tables to ask if our food was ok I guess. 4 The one time she did check on us and fill our tea she spilt it all over my husband's arm and the table cloth. She didn't even look back, or apologize, or offer to clean it up or anything. I don't known if she treated us this way because we are young, or because we used a groupon, or what. I didn't really notice her going out of the way for the other patrons, but at least she seemed to be checking on them. You may want to inform her that people like us use groupon to try new places and if we like it we'd be back. Together without the groupon our dinner would have been $80. Plus tip. No big deal for us, we do that about once a week, and id say the ribeyes were worth it. Honestly with the way she treated us though I doubt I'd go back. I can spend the same at Stonewood or Cattlemans , or spend and extra $20 an go to Ruth's Chris or Del Friscos. Just thought you'd like to know and that Judy probably cost you a lot more than just one couple of could be regulars. Thanks for your time, and sorry your crappy waitress is ruining your reputation.

An unexpected restaurant in an unexpected part of town but with good steaks and sides. The interior reminded me of what a classy restaurant would look like....15 years ago. It's kind of like making fun of your grandmom's house, so you kind of feel guilty, but at least the food is good. Seriously though, I know we're in Nascar country but the memorabilia just doesn't fit in this place. Then again, maybe I'm just a damn yankee who doesn't get it. I want to get the point across that the food is good, it's just a random place in the middle of nowhere. What is nice is that it is away from the commercial-ville that is ISB about 5 miles East. It's an old school place that does good ole' fashioned steaks well.

I purchased a Groupon, we did not have reservations but they seated us any way. The staff is very personable. I ordered the stuff Grouper with vegetable medley. I would definitely go back.

6:30 reservation, didn't get drinks until 6:45 and the waitress finally took our order at 7pm. I asked for my steak medium, it came out medium rare so I sent it back. It came back out medium rare again. I couldn't let the waitress know it was still undercooked because, after she dropped the steak off she didn't come back and ask how it was. So, when she did come back I told her to just take it. My husbands steak was also medium rare and he ordered medium but, he just ate it. Slow service and not the most friendly bunch.Don't waste your money even if you have a Groupon, its NOT worth it. Oh and be prepared to have an empty drink glass.

Went using a Groupon. Strange place out in the middle of nowhere. No atmosphere. Good candidate for one of those restaurant makeover shows. But the filet mignon was to die for...wow! Delicious! Service was poor...sat with empty drink glasses twice. Didn't ask if we wanted dessert or coffee...just brought the bill. Our service was poor but not as bad as the next table where they were quite abandoned.

Been going there for years and never had a bad meal just fine aged Midwestern beef. Family owned and managed and you can spend hours looking at all the pictures of the famious drivers that have eaten there over the years. if you go over speedweeks you will see drivers and team owners eating there as it is a favorite hangout. If you go ask for Jennifer she is one of the owners and the managers and tell JB from Naples, Fl. sent you.

Great steaks in an old school steakhouse that's been around since '48. Prices are fair for the high quality of meat. Service was good, not excellent, but they were running two servers and a server assistant for about 10 tables sat. (There were terrible thunderstorms all night, so I think they were much slower than usual.) We had a party of 6 and everything was as ordered. We ordered an expensive bottle of wine, and they happened to be out of stock. They gave us a bottle that would've been about $20 more for the same price. The room and decor feel tired, but I think you have to almost expect that for an establishment that's been around 65+ years. All in all if you're craving a top notch steak and delicious baked potato, it's a great spot to go.

I went with a group of 8 on a Wednesday night and was filled with anticipation since some of my co-workers were all raving about this place. Needless to say, that I was sold or wanting to be sold based on their reviews, the old charm of the building, and the ratings i read online. Maybe this was an off-night; service was VERY slow, food was cold, drinks weren't refilled without being asked, and did I say service was VERY VERY slow?!? We got there at 6:30 and wasn't done with our meal until 9:25. This wasnt because we were hanging out after a meal enjoying coffee and desert - we waited for everything! We endured this painstaking meal because it was getting late, we all had a couple of drinks while waiting, we got our salads and bread within 1.5 hours, and it would've been too much trouble for all of us to try another restaurant that late in the evening. I don't doubt that this is usually a nice restaurant with decent service, maybe they were short staffed, but I will twice next time.

Steak was amazing! French onion soup best I have ever had. Overall very happy. We live in Brandon, Florida and will take a 3hr drive just to eat here again.

We are part time residents of Daytona Beach, so we visit Gene's multiple times a year. Dined there last evening and everything was as it always is; EXCELLENT. Being a Saturday, service was slightly slower than expected, but our waitperson, Judy, really hustled and our meal arrived as ordered and HOT. The steaks here rival the best I have had anywhere including NY City and my constant companion, a fish devote, raved (again) about the Grouper dinner. Salads are fresh and crisp and the homemade dressings are wonderful. Even the lowly baked potato is a special treat at Gene's. When in Daytona, this restaurant is a MUST.

Updated my review after last 2 meals. I have always enjoyed this spot, 95% of the time it is excellent and we always love going. A great spot to step back in time..home made dressings are great..steaks are very good. Try the prime rib and also wings (yes wings), they have won many awards. When places like this are gone, we will all be eating at "Texas Road House" We all should think about that. I think they have been here since the 40's

Genes steak house we had a party of 5 the service was terrible the waiter never came back for water or to check on us. After 30 minutes of waiting for our meal we again asked and was told it was being plated at that time. Another 10 minutes went by and then we got our food. One persons fish was raw in parts and other had a steak that was mostly fat that you could see another person ordered a side of vegetables and she received 3 pieces of vegetables that were hard and not even cooked. What a nightmare I will never go here again. BE AWARE

I want to make this as descriptive as possible. This place is not your regular hoytie toytie Midwest grass fed steakhouse. You will not get the great land from down under. If you want a great date for a young couple- don't go. Coming here after you just had your second child, you will just laugh the whole time. Your experience is one of a kind. Telling your Dad, that you took your girlfriend her- he might slap you in the face and tell you to be ashamed of yourself. If Bob says, "hey we are pre-gaming for John's Funeral at Gene's",you are at the right place. Whoever Gene is, he must have died unhappy. Then when you order the bottle of unique wine, they have to run to the local wine store and buy it. Getting an appetizer is your beginning of the end, it will make you sick before you even see the steak. This place makes a decent mid-rare steak into a nightmare burnt to the crisp crappy steak chip. I was crestfallen with the less than edible piece of grill top that came out on an angular plate. The worst part is I paid the same price as I would at a Capital Grill or New York Prime. If you think you need to try a Daytona Beach legend, DON'T GO! You will disappoint your ancestors and your ancestor-in-laws. You will be haunted at night until you right your wrong at a real steakhouse! NEVER GO HERE!

After living in town for 40 years, I finally got around to giving Genes a try. The service is odd at best. I didn't appreciate having to wait 20 mins for a table when I was on time for my reservation, while the people who walked in the door at the same time, who had no reservation were seated immediately. We ordered two identical steaks, cooked the same, one was outstanding, and the other was undercooked and tough. Interior is a bit dated, and feels like an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" in the making. Prices are too high for the quality and service.

Excellent service found a deal on groupon and my bf brought me here for my birthday.. I loved my apple martini and I got the filet mignon.. it was amazing!! Our waitor was excellent!! If you want good quality steak and want to supporton old fashioned mom and pop business in Daytona come here! Also, its been around for 65 years what other business can say that?

My husband and I went here the other night and had a great experience. The place wasn't crowded, which I liked. The decor is simple, kind of old-timey and a little dark (dark red carpet, no windows...) Our waiter Gabriel was really helpful and personable, as well as knowledgeable. He gave us a little history lesson about the restaurant and their steaks. He also made some great recommendations. We got the wings to start, and they were excellent! I ordered the prime rib for my entree, my husband ordered the sirloin. Both steaks were huge and well prepared (however, my husband said it could've used a bit more seasoning). I thought it was cool that they bring you a little basket of crackers and homemade pickles, baby corn and sweet relish. When your steak comes out, they have a guy come around with garnishes for your baked potato (sour cream, real homemade bacon, chives). For dessert we ordered a Brandy Alexander to split, and it was amazing! What a treat! This place is pretty pricey, so be ready to drop at least $100 if you get dinner and wine and whatnot. All the sides are a la carte, but the steaks do come with house salad and a baked potato. We got a side of grilled veggies to share. Overall, a great experience! I can't wait to go back! P.S. I should probably mention that my husband has worked in the meat industry as a butcher and was very impressed by this steak house.

Gene's Steak House is the perfect choice for your special occasion. Be prepared to pay it is a genuine old style Steak House. Exquisite cuisine. As the many $$$ signs above states, very expensive. Has a kids menu. However, though pricey, the food is worth every dime. Everything I have eaten was very good. This is a great place to go on a date or an anniversary. Very nice place to eat. We made it a place to eat for our last night on our Florida vacation. 5 people, tip@tax= $230

My wife and I had reservations for 8 pm Thursday night. We arrived at 7:55 and although there were 2 employees nearby, we were not greeted for several minutes. We were finally seated and introduced to Joseph our server. He disappeared. Melissa came by and took our drink order. I ordered a martini on the rocks, but was served straight up. After realizing her error, Melissa brought me a glass of ice. Huh? Don't you bring another drink? At any rate here comes Joseph to take our dinner order. He took appetizer, salad, and entree order at one time so he could "time everything coming out". After a fairly lengthily wait, here comes the appetizer of escargot and toast points. Joseph announces "Here's your snails". So tacky. After another lengthily wait Melissa brings out a bread basket. More waiting. Then finally, here are the salads brought out by Melissa. Joseph is still missing. We finish our salads and wait and wait and wait some more. Other diners arriving after us are getting their food and attentive service. Suddenly Joseph arrives with our platter of sirloin for 2. When my wife asks what took so long, Joseph's surly remark was "I don't cook the food", and off he stomps. But wait! Where are our plates and baked potato? Melissa comes along with them. I ask for sour cream. Instead of offering it on the table she brings it out and dishes it out. No, I like to dress my potato with salt and pepper and maybe more sour cream. We asked Melissa to not send Joseph by, (not that he had been). The steak was properly cooked, but sliced unevenly. I like a touch of garlic, but it was not offered. Melissa almost saved the night that Joseph ruined. The poor service and average food makes this a 2 star.

Gene's Steak House is a refreshing change of pace to the frenetic world of dining in a tourist town. From the moment you walk in the door and take in the eclectic hodgepodge of furnishings you realize that you are in a different sort of place. In a chain dominated environment, Gene's stands out in a positive fashion. The atmosphere is casual yet refined, while maintaining an aura of relaxation. The wait staff is laid back and unpretentious, giving the diner the feeling that they are the only one in the dining room. Be prepared to pay. Gene's is not an inexpensive cookie cutter steak place, instead it is a genuine old style Steak House. The aged mid-western beef is prepared perfectly. When you request medium, it's truly medium, an unusual occurrence in many places these days. The tip for the day is surprising given the venue. Ask for the chicken wings as an appetizer. They aren't on the menu. These wings are smoked, deep fried, sauced in a mild Chile sauce, then grilled. These are the kind of wings that will make you smack your momma. Gene's Steak House is the perfect choice for your special occasion.

The exterior design of this building does no justice to the food, service and ambience that lie behind its doors. If it wasn't for the Groupon deal earlier this week, I'd probably have missed this gem of a steak house throughout my university life in Embry-Riddle. Food 4.5/5.0: I had the New York striploin done Chicago medium-rare. They call it Pittsburg instead of Chicago. Charred and smoky on the outside, medium rare on the inside. My companion had the ribeye w medium rare doneness. Both steaks were perfect. We also had a order of their house wings. Smoky and sweet. Good. Service 4.5/5.0: The waiter/waitresses are really efficient and quick in their service. Plates were cleared swiftly and they're always around to look into our needs. Unlike other establishments, the staff here help one another out. Ambiance 4.5/5.0: Classy, rustic and cosy setting. A good place for family reunions or dates.

Here's the skinny on Gene's: We started with the mussels in wine broth - amazing! We ordered garlic bread to sop up the juices, not realizing Gene's provides free bread with meal - would have been nice if server volunteered that information before we ordered a $5 loaf. Hubs ordered the 'classic' blue cheese salad (pretty good), I got the caesar salad. It was not traditional, like Chart House, but pretty decent. We ordered the sirloin for two - huge serving, had some to take home. The steak was better than Hyde Park and cooked as asked. We ordered creamed spinach, but they didn't notify us they were out (?!?!) until they brought the steak - too late to order a substitute (their loss). Service was slow as molasses, but friendly. Ambiance is outdated, but there are a few cozy tables. Lighting is dimmed nicely for romance, but not so terrible you can't read the menu! Noise level is at a minimum and parking is easy. NOTE - the entrance can be difficult to locate now because of construction on I-92.

Not a bad steakhouse. Everything was definitely above-average, and it's good value for the price, especially with the Groupon that we used. It's not on the level as some of Florida's better steak houses, like Bern's or Shula's, but that's reflected in the prices. A very good restaurant. The steaks were cooked well, and the French Onion soup was very good. Nothing exceptional, but for a birthday or anniversary dinner where you want to spend under $50 per person, we wouldn't hesitate to go back. Our total was $80 with a $25 Groupon for two people, so the dinner was $55 out-of-pocket for us, which was exceptional value.

Went to dinner last night prime rib special. Prime rib. There is never a question of quality, always top notch. Update the dacor and it will be fantastic. Read that ownership has changed and that the remodel is planned. Always a great meal. Highly recommended.

Established in 1948 last renovated in 1948 no I'm joking I don't have a clue if this place is as original as it looks but I hope they never change a thing. Gene's Steak House is an iconic landmark in the area. It's amazing how many people outside the area mention this place when talking about Daytona. The race teams frequent this place when in town and many of those famous photos are part of the decor. You immediately know this is an old school steak house as soon as you walk through the door and one look at the well seasoned grill you know a few thousand steaks have laid across its grates. if you've never eaten at a real steak house you owe it to yourself to try this one, this ain't no Outback or Roadhouse those guys shouldn't be able to even call themselves a steak house (just my opinion) they aren't close to this level of dining. Get a steak any steak choose your cut, tell the server how you'd like it cooked and wait to be impressed.

Pretty much nothing has change since the 80's (frozen in time) The steaks still taste very good just not as tender (they never gave you a knife because it was that tender) (probably not aged as much)

  • Gregg B.

Food is not as good as it used to be. My strip steak, while it was cooked med.rare was gristley and not of the caliber that I would expect from a steak house that has $30+ prices. Plus it was not nearly the 16oz that is advertised on the menu. True you get salad or soup but the baked potato I ordered was partially cold so it had probably been left over and reheated. Plus the bread was stale at 7pm at dinner hour. Condiments cannot cover up the warmed over factor. I realize restaurants are tough business but many present decent food without streached promises.

Horrible meal, horrible and unfriendly service, probably the worst place in Daytona Beach to have a decent meal and good time. Stay away at all costs. These people even screw the locals at charity events from what I hear.

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. Wish I may, wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.... I wish, to be in a bowl filled with the house gin martini that has the slightest hint of fresh lemon/lime and then smothered with the house bleu cheese dressing... And then, to be plopped into a field and spooned by the fillet... I can sleep happily knowing there is a restaurant FINALLY in Florida that is focused on preparing food in the most delightful way that its intended to be prepared. I haven't had a meal this delightful in years. The stuffed mushroom caps are made with fresh crab - I can't say that enough... Fresh crab! . My meal was served with a potato with sea-salted skin and served with choice of chive, sour cream and fresh bacon. Really can't say enough about this place. It's local and family owned and that's the best part. Everyone is either family, or has been there so long they become family - and it's what you feel like when you leave...

Nice, old school place. Reminds me of places in the 70's. Great steaks and regardless of other posts, had terrific service on a Saturday night. I would go back.

Had the weirdest experience ever there. We came around 6:30 pm. A guy at the bar said "we might be closed" ??? The sign said 5-10 pm. A waiter then said he needed to check on something. We should have left right then. There were two people at the bar, and four people in the restaurant finishing up. The waiter first came to us, but then disappeared and we never saw him again. The bartender guy became our waiter. They were out of bone in steaks. The meal is only your meat plus a soup or salad, no sides. The bartender guy then became the chef. Literally we had the place to ourselves. The steak was ok, but nothing special. The bill was $87 for two with no drinks. We would have done better at a Texas Roadhouse or Outback type restaurant. Not sure if everybody quit, or what happened.
